Welcome to ELA

Welcome to Ms. Cousin's 8th Grade English Language Arts class website!

During this course, students will strengthen their understanding of reading, writing, research, listening, speaking, and the oral and written conventions of the English language. Emphasis will be placed on developing students’ skills in critical, analytical, and creative thinking. Students will be expected to read and write on a daily basis.

Eighth grade is a time of transition, growth, and opportunity.  A nurturing environment, courtesy and respect for self and others, truthfulness in actions, and a desire for learning will guide all classroom experiences.  Hopefully, you will come to know, understand, and appreciate not only your work but also the work of others.

Communication:

I will be sending out weekly "REMIND" notices via text to keep you all informed of upcoming due dates and tests. Email is the quickest way to get a response from me and to communicate about your child. I will normally respond to you within an hour or two, at most.

My email address is:

1 composition book

Supplies that need to be replenished throughout the year:

PENCILS

Highlighters

Post-it notes

Glue-sticks

GRADES:

Your grade in this course will be determined using the following percentages:

Major Grades (Test & Projects)  40%

Quizzes & Common Assessments  35%

Daily Work & Homework  25%

                                             TOTAL: 100%

Policy for Failing Quiz/Test Grades:

Any score below 70 is considered a failing grade and puts your child at risk of not passing the 9 weeks.  If your child fails a quiz/test, he/she needs to make test/quiz corrections.  They will need to review those concepts that were not mastered and explain why they missed the question.  They may earn back points missed up to 75% for the quiz/test.

Make-Up Tests/Assignments:

The student is responsible for scheduling a time to come in to make up their test. The best time to make up a test is during morning tutorials, but if that does not work, then the teacher and student will come up with a plan that works. Students will not be allowed to make up a test during class time.
