April 17, 2025 -Memorial Early College High School Valedictorian Sophia Arreguin gives us an inside look into her high school experience in a graduation Q+A.
How did you find out you were Valedictorian?
When I found out I was the official Valedictorian it was a huge sigh of relief! I did tear up because it felt like all of my hard work throughout high school kind of came to fruition at that moment and I called my mom immediately to tell her the good news! We celebrated with sushi that evening.
Can you share what your speech is going to be about?
I still have a lot more writing to do, but I know I want my speech to be memorable. It will include a lesson to my peers about determination and that they can achieve their goals if they set their mind to it. My peers are some of the most capable people I have ever met, so I just want them to know that they can chase their dreams, truly.
Describe the entirety of your high school experience in one word.
Transformative.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Probably time travel, so that I can go back in history and experience some of our most influential times. I love history, so to be able to witness it first hand would be such a unique experience.
What's your favorite way to relax?
I love to go on hikes and walks with my dog, Rosie. She is definitely a big comfort for me in any stressful time, so to be able to go out with her is such a blessing.
If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be?
I would probably go out to eat with Cleopatra. I think she was such a powerful figure during her chaotic time. She had so much wisdom for a female, which I find incredibly empowering.
Who would you say is your biggest supporter? Why?
My parents. They have been a really big support system for me throughout high school. My mom really emphasized kindness and doing the right thing, and my dad has taught me a lot about determination.
If your high school experience was a movie/song, what movie/song would it be?
Juggling all of the assignments of high school has been very similar to the directing of Baz Luhrmann, so I would say the chaos of the last four years would be comparable to his movies and directing style.
What are your plans after graduation?
I will be attending the University of Texas at Austin, hook em’ horns! I intend to major in biology as a pre-dental student and go into Dentistry to one day have my very own practice. At UT I plan to continue my involvement in the Women in Stem Living Learning Community and participate in research to expand my horizons, as well as join clubs like a book club and hike!
What's a piece of advice you'd give your younger self?
Give yourself more time to relax and spend more time for yourself instead of worrying about what others think or their expectations.
Thank you Sophia Arreguin for Growing Greatness on your Path to Success!
