Four Comal ISD JROTC Programs Receive National Acclaim

October 25, 2024 - The Comal ISD Board of Trustees recognized four of the district's JROTC programs during its regular meeting Thursday. Each program earned national success during the summer.

Canyon High School Air Force JROTC was awarded the prestigious Distinguished Unit Award for the 2023-2024 school year by the United States Department of Defense.

This award recognizes the exceptional performance of the Canyon High JROTC program, as well as its contributions to the school and the community. This achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment of the cadets and instructors who continually strive for excellence in leadership, service and academics. The CHS JROTC instructors are Lt. Col. Timothy Biltz and Master Sgt. Oscar Rios.

Davenport High School Army JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl team qualified and competed in the National Academic Bowl Championship in Washington, DC, on the campus of The Catholic University of America in June, finishing 14th in the nation out of 1,700 programs. Team members include Kaden Dohmen, Raithe Fox, Stone Pena, Storm Pena and Bradley Quick. The DHS JROTC instructors are Lt. Col. Patrick Almond and 1st Sgt. Kenneth Carbon.

Pieper High School Navy National Defense Cadet Corps, also known as the Warrior Company. In only its third year in existence, the Warrior Company was awarded the 2024 Navy League Most Improved Unit in the Nation by the Naval Service Training Command on July 10.

This national award is quite an honor for such a young program and school. Furthermore, this is the second year in a row that the program was nominated for this award. The Warrior Company instructors are Major Dave Bower and Senior Chief Craig Steele.

The final group to be recognized was the Smithson Valley High School Navy JROTC which was recognized as the NJROTC Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors for the 2023-2024 school year. In fact, Smithson Valley was ranked third of 28 NJROTC units in Area 18. Only the top nine in the area were recognized as Distinguished Units, and only the top six were recognized as Distinguished Units with Academic Honors. The SVHS JROTC instructors are Commander Scott Outlaw and Chief Daniel Hansen.

Congratulations!
