Davenport High School Aviation Student Completes Aim High Flight Academy

Sept. 6, 2022 - An aviation student from Davenport High School in the Comal Independent School District completed the Aim High Flight Academy this summer and earned 15 hours towards her pilot’s license.

Amy Schoenenberger, 17, spent three weeks at Peter Prince Field in Milton, Florida, this summer training to fly a Cessna 172L/M/N, and is one step closer to fulfilling her dream of becoming a pilot and ultimately, an astronaut.

“I enjoyed every part of the academy,” Schoenenberger said. “I had fun flying planes, meeting new people from all around the United States and making friends. Being around airplanes 24/7 was a blast.”

The academy is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-based, aviation-focused, motivation and mentorship program created by the Air Force Recruiting Service. It is designed to expose young students like Schoenenberger to a career in aviation.

“This experience inspired me even more to become a pilot,” said Schoenenberger, who is a senior this year taking Aircraft Airframe Technology/Aviation at DHS. “This was a memorable first step on the journey to apply for the astronaut program.”

In addition to completing the Aim High Flight Academy this summer, Schoenenberger attended her third space camp in Huntsville, Alabama, where she practiced scuba diving just like astronauts do for space walk training.
