February 2, 2024 - This year’s Comal ISD KENS 5 All-Star Athlete is Megan Hawkins, a four-year volleyball letterman at Canyon High School whose leadership led the Cougarette volleyball team to its third consecutive 40-win season this fall.
“I am extremely excited and honored to receive this award,” says Hawkins who began playing volleyball at the age of 8 and on her first club team at 10. “There are many talented athletes within Comal ISD. I am very thankful that I have had the opportunity to play for one of the best coaches in the state of Texas as well as play with such incredible teammates over the last four years.”
Hawkins was nominated for the award by CHS Head Volleyball Coach and Assistant Athletic Coordinator Heather Sanders because of her leadership and determination to win.
“She is the ultimate leader and teammate,” says Sanders. “She always places the team’s interests above her own.”
In fact, Hawkins is well-known throughout the volleyball community in the central Texas area, and she is an excellent student who is respected by the CHS staff for her tenacity, strength of character and kindness.
She recently accepted a 4-year-scholarship to play volleyball with the University of Louisiana and graduated from CHS early to begin her collegiate career immediately. She is studying kinesiology with plans to become a physical therapist.
A few of her athletic honors include being named the district’s Most Valuable Player in 2023 and 2022 and Most Valuable Setter in 2021. In addition, she has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2023 All Region Team, AVCA 1st Team All-America, the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Elite Team 2022 and the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) All-Star 2022.
